Garden beds are 4 feet by 10 feet and will be alotted on a first-come, first-served basis. Plots are dispersed to downtown residents (defined as living within these boundaries: east of Kroemer Avenue, west of Cross River Drive [Route 105], south of Old Country Road [Route 58] and north of the river) first, Riverhead town residents second, and out-of-town residents third.

There is a fee of $25 per plot to help cover garden expenses. To download a garden plot application click here. [DOWNLOAD]

Gardeners must commit to having something planted in their plots by June 1 and keeping them planted until October 1.

In addition to tending their own plots, gardeners are expected to volunteer hours toward community gardening efforts.iStock_000015311855XSmall

Plots may be planted with annual, non-invasive species. (No perennials.) Only organic fertilizers, insecticides or weed repellents may be used and must be applied in such a way that they will not affect other plots. These items cannot be stored on the premises.

Gardeners will keep weeds at a minimum and maintain the areas immediately surrounding their plots.

The garden will have compost bins in which gardeners may place compostable items.

Sorry, but pets are not allowed in the garden. No smoking or chewing tobacco is allowed in the garden. Tobacco can transmit a lethal virus to tomatoes and cigarette butts are loaded with toxins.
